Why do shoelaces untie themselves?

Two motions work together: repeated foot strikes loosen the knot, then the swinging free ends pull lace through it until failure runs away.

Short answer: a shoelace knot can survive many steps and then fail in seconds because walking combines two attacks on it: the shoe repeatedly hits the ground, deforming and loosening the knot, while the free lace ends whip back and forth and tug strands through the loosened center.

It is not just “a bad knot”

Researchers at UC Berkeley filmed shoelaces with high-speed cameras and built experiments to separate the effects of impact and swinging. Stomping alone was not enough, and swinging a shoe without impacts was not enough. Together, however, those motions can drive rapid failure.

The key is that failure is often runaway. Friction can hold the knot for many cycles while only tiny changes accumulate. Once enough lace slips, the forces on the loops and free ends become unbalanced and the knot can disappear within a stride or two.

Why knot structure matters

Two knots that look nearly identical can have very different stability. A balanced reef-style bow resists cyclic loading better than the common “granny” orientation. Lace stiffness, slipperiness and the lengths of the loops and tails also change the forces.
